Medical physics is the branch of science which is relevant to the application of physical, mathematical techniques and concepts in diagnosis and treatment of patients in all the fields of medical.

The one who has bachelors degree in Physics, Physics Engineering and Nuclear Energy Engineering and then obtaining the Masters Degree on Medical Physics for giving the best result with the least dose in diagnostic field by ensuring the radiation safety of patient, for offering the patient treatments and planning, dose measuring and calculations as required for treating the patient in the most accurate and reliable manner by protecting the healthy tissues and organs in treatment, for ensuring the radiation safety of employees, public and environment, for activating the new systems, for developing the new methods in applying the Medical Radiation Sources in medicine. It is compulsory that the Masters Degree is taken from Health Sciences or Institute of Science giving education on radiotherapy (courses, thesis, clinical practices on radiotherapy are compulsory).

Medical Physicians are working in the hospitals of Ministry of Health or of Universities and in private hospitals. Their work fields are constituted mainly by the ionized radiation such as radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and diagnostic radiology. For example, the physicians working in above given fields are named as “Radiology Physician” or “Radiation Physician”. There are also the Medical Physicians working in university clinics and with non – ionized radiation For example, physiologic monitoring of patients, ultrasound ophthalmology and biomedical engineering. The duties and responsibilities of medical physicians are constituted mainly by the below given active work fields:

  • Radiation Oncology
  • Diagnostic Therapy
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Health Physics and Protection against Radiation
  • Non – Ionized Radiation

Most of the Medical Physicians in Hospitals and Medical Institutes are the Radiation Physicians. Most of these Physicians work in cancer treatment centers and institutions. Their contributions in diagnosis and treatment of cancer have substantial importance. The need for the Physicians working in other branches of medicine has been increasing within the last 20 years.

  1. Executing the calibration of all the devices used in the measuring the radio – isotopes and checking whether they are working under normal conditions or not
  2. Having the measurements required to determine the amount of open and closed radio- isotopes to be used on patients for diagnosis and treatment
  3. Being busy with the repair and maintenance works of devices used for measuring the radio-isotopes in diagnosis and treatment and checking whether they are working under normal conditions or not
  4. Giving help to the practitioners in applying the radio-isotopes for medical purposes
  5. Organizing the works relevant to the ordering, storage and distribution of radioactive isotopes, and taking the precautions for preventing the scattering and getting lost of them
  6. Having the analysis and calculation on the results gathered from the measurement tools at the end of isotopes applications
  7. Implementing the current rules and putting new rules for ensuring that the radioisotopes are used by the health rules and for preventing the damages of surrounding people
  8. Implementing the regulation and legislation rules to clean and remove the contaminating radioactivity on the tools and equipment used in radioisotopes practices and putting new rules when required
  9. Making the plans for protection of radioisotope laboratories, making the calculations for armoring and providing help to the architects and engineers in making the plans for construction, executing the supportive checks during the construction activities
  10. Being busy with the training of personnel working in nuclear medical branches and organizing the courses for technicians
  1. Design and radio – projection of radiation rooms
  2. Selecting the radiation devices; executing the tests on them and receiving them
  3. Executing the mechanical and dosimeter calibration of radiation devices (external treatment devices, high – energy of linear accelerators, braki-therapy devices) and implementing the periodical controls
  4. Ensuring the quality control of diagnosis devices used in radiotherapy
  5. Preparing the devices for clinical treatment
  6. For the treatment planning system, collecting the data of all the treatment devices and loading the data in treatment planning computer and then, confirming the information
  7. Ensuring the transfer of treatment data in line with the simulator, CT – SIM, treatment planning and treatment device and then, ensuring the sustainability in control
  8. Ensuring the patient dose planning in treatment planning system; providing, confirming and executing the treatment planning such as standard (conventional), conformal, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  9. Checking the system by putting importance on the mistakes which may emerge in software upgrades of treatment device and planning systems
  10. Executing the application plans, dosimeter calculation and quality controls in braki – therapy applications, low dose speed, high dose speed and manual braki – therapy practices
  11. Keeping and protecting the radioactive resources
  12. Executing the calculation of radioactive implant practices in uveal- melanoma of eye
  13. Treatment of prostate cancer by radioactive iodine and palladium
  14. Confirming the treatment and applied dose by using in – vivo dosimeter (film, diode, TLD) in all the treatments
  15. Ensuring the radiation safety of employees, patient and patient’s relatives
  16. Ensuring the safe use and storage of radioactive resources and regular control system for wastes
  17. Executing the periodical calibration of measuring sets used in calibration of devices and providing the protection in convenient conditions
  18. Checking whether the people working or not working in radiotherapy centers follow the condition predicted in regulation and legislation or not; measuring the doses of personnel, applying the personnel monitoring system and keeping the records
  19. Giving the regular training on protection against radiation
  20. Giving the radiation physics training to the practitioners
  21. Having the scientific researches and making them useful in clinics
  1. Tracking and determining the radiation danger for health
  2. Making the program and plan for the safety of personnel and public who are busy with radiation and implementing them, executing the controls on them
  3. Keeping the records of dose levels of personnel working with radiation
  4. Working in the commission assigned for constituting the law, regulation and legislation; giving information in technical issues and providing information to the members in relevant issues
  5. Measuring the amount of radiation in all the types and levels
  6. Preparing and developing the health and safety rules in the issues which are relevant to the radiation health of people in industry and transportation
  7. Being busy with the transactions for radiation controls for safe operation of devices providing the protection against radiation
  8. Having cooperation with fire fighters and civil defense and creating the safety plans
  9. Auditing whether the places such as the hospitals, institutes, clinics, laboratories, plants, factories, dispensers which use the radiation devices for medical, physical and industrial purposes work by the regulation and legislation on Radiation Health and Safety or not; executing the relevant radiation measurements, issuing the report on the precautions to be taken and issuing the report on work or use permit for such places,
  10. Issuing the plan for protection against radiation, implementing the monitoring in region, disposing the armoring and radioactive wastes, making plans for transportation and executing the audits
  11. Supplying and trying the tools for developing the dosimeter techniques and methods
  12. Detecting the leakage of radioactive sources and radio – isotopes
  13. Cooperating with the judiciary authorities for closing the institutions working against the regulation and legislation on radiation health and safety
  14. Putting the rules required for safe operation of nuclear plants and reactors; auditing them and executing the environment controls
  15. Auditing the establishments using the laser beams, microwaves, ultrasounds and magnetic fields for various purposes; issuing the regulation and legislation for the health and safety of workers and people residing around them
  16. Managing the radiation monitoring services around the country and keeping the relevant records
  17. Organizing the courses for training the people working on radiation

Medical Physicians work generally in the sciences relevant to radiation. However, there are the medical physicians who work in applying non – ionizing radiations in medicine and who have great roles in researches.   1. Making the calibration of all x radiations used for diagnosis of diseases and checking them periodically
  2. Providing assistance to the architectures and engineers in making the plans of radio – diagnostic branches to be built newly. Calculating the armoring in protection against radiation
  3. Checking whether the devices used in radio – diagnostic branch in diagnosis of diseases are used under standard conditions or not
  4. Finding the precautions to decrease the patient dose during the diagnostic inspections; measuring the doses taken by the patient, technician and practitioners
  5. Executing the survey on radio – diagnostic branches and measuring the leakage radiation of devices. Implementing the conditions in regulation and legislation on radiation health and safety
  6. Detecting the diagnostic quality of new diagnostic devices used in private radiologic inspections (mammography, tomography, computerized axial tomography), assisting the practitioners in selecting them
  7. Operating the special radiologic devices and training the technicians
  8. Being busy with dark – room studies and implementing the new techniques
  9. Training all the personnel working with radiation about radio- physics. Organizing the courses for technicians.
